Get rid of migraines

Migraines are the third most common ailment globally, preventing millions of people from performing their daily tasks νand significantly reducing their quality of life. If you are one of these people, you are well aware of the impact that these strong headaches have on your everyday life.

Until recently, migraines have exclusively been treated with medication and lifestyle changes. However, some sufferers don't experience any improvements from these methods. Even Botox injections, which have helped many sufferers to relieve some of the pain, must be carried out regularly in order to achieve any results, not to mention that these are expensive and time consuming, if carried out frequently. Surgical treatment for migraines is carried out by very few doctors around the world. Dr. Saad is one of the few pioneers of this technique, which offers comfort to migraine sufferers who can't achieve results from other methods. Dr. Saad is the Founder of the California Migraine Surgery Center, the first centre dedicated to surgical treatment of migraines in San Diego, USA, one of the first of its kind in the world, and has now founded the Migraine Clinic at the Instituto Javier de Benito in Barcelona

Are you a candidate for this treatment?
In most cases, candidates suffer from what is known as chronic migraines, which is characterised by 15 or more migraines per month. Surgical intervention is recommended when other forms of treatment are not successful or if they have caused serious side effects. Patients who have responded well to Botox injections but would like a more permanent solution, are also good candidates for surgical treatment.

Before the surgical treatment for migraines:
Your initial appointment with Dr. Saad can be face to face or via Skype. It begins with you filling out a detailed questionnaire that provides the doctor with plenty of information about the frequency and duration of your migraines, as well as the specific symptoms that you face. This helps him to determine whether or not surgical treatment is the right option for you. Identifying your migraine triggers will also be part of this consultation, given that the surgical treatment includes releasing your nerves in these positions to avoid future migraines. Once Dr. Saad confirms that surgical treatment is the right treatment for you, he will inform you about the procedure, so that you have the chance to discuss the potential risks and benefits of the treatment, and to ask any questions you may have regarding the treatment. The purpose of this discussion with Dr. Saad is to make you feel comfortable with your decision to move forward with the treatment, and to ensure that this is the right choice for you.

The surgical treatment:
The procedure focuses on releasing compressed nerves under the surface of the skin that contribute to the onset of migraines. Surgical treatment of migraines is carried out using general or local anaesthesia. It does not penetrate the skull or reach the brain in any way. The duration of the surgery depends on the number of points that need to be treated, but usually takes 1-2 hours.

Recovery procedure
Recovery depends on the number of points treated. There is usually mild swelling and bruising around the incisions, but these heal within 1-2 weeks. Most patients return to their normal activities in under a week, but this depends on the position of the incisions, and you many need to refrain from strenuous exercise for a little longer.
